Teddi Twombly

Teddi Twombly is an active member of GleanKY’s Franklin County chapter. She travels wherever she sees the need to glean and has played a huge role in rescuing produce from U.K. South Farm in Lexington, Hazelfield Farm in Owenton, and, of course, several locations around Frankfort.

When did you start volunteering with GleanKY?

2015

Why do you glean?

So edible food doesn’t go to waste and children in need may have access to fresh produce that they may not otherwise have.

What advice would you give to new gleaners?

Dress for the weather! Also, try to be on the “giving” (or distributing) end of the process in addition to the “gleaning” end. It is so rewarding to see the faces of those that receive.

Any favorite gleaning moments that stick out?

I enjoyed hearing a donating farmer say how much he appreciated seeing the produce he grew not going to waste.

If you were stuck on a desert island with one fruit/vegetable, what would it be and why?

If I were stuck on an island, assuming I were surrounded by saltwater, I would choose to be stranded with prickly pear cactus. You can eat the flesh and fruit, as well as squeeze fresh water out of it!  (I was actually stuck on that question because I like so many fruits and vegetables.)
