Everyone, meet Ned Wertz!

Ned is one of our amazing volunteers in Central Kentucky and has been a consistent gleaner since 2021. In 2022, he redistributed almost 2,500 lbs of produce to feeding programs in Lexington.

Ned was initially inspired to fight food insecurity after hearing an interview with one of his favorite musicians, Harry Chapin. Chapin was recounting a story about his young children collecting food for a school project–  making Thanksgiving baskets for people who didn’t have the means to make this holiday meal.

While telling this story, Chapin posed, “What are those people to eat the day after Thanksgiving?” This question struck a chord with Ned, that hunger is not solved by one food drive or providing one meal; it’s an everyday problem.

Ned decided that after he retired, he would dedicate his efforts to people experiencing food insecurity.

Get to know Ned as he answers questions about himself and volunteering with Glean Kentucky:

How did you learn about Glean Kentucky?

Several years ago, I was introduced to Ryan Quarles by a mutual friend. I told Ryan I was retiring and wanted to volunteer for an organization dealing with food insecurity. He recommended Glean Kentucky to me.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about golf.

Tell us about a relationship you have established through volunteering with Glean KY that stands out to you.

I deliver primarily to two locations, and both of the ladies there are so special. They break down and redistribute the food I deliver to others, and it is humbling to me to see their dedication. They inspire me every time I see them. They know my cell number and always greet me warmly. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to get to know them.

What’s one dish that you must have at a family gathering?

Pickled eggs. You may have to Google to see them.

Do you volunteer with other organizations? If so, which ones?

I have volunteered at the Barbasol PGA event every year so far.

What do you like to do when you’re not volunteering?

I love traveling with my wife. Since retiring, we’ve been to Australia, Alaska, the Caribbean, St Louis, Scottsdale, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, St Paul, Florida, and Harrisburg. With more trips planned.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?

Green, very soothing to me. Probably because it’s the primary color on a golf course (and money too)!

If you could eat one fruit or veggie every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Huckleberries, specifically my mother’s huckleberry pie.
