Without the help of dedicated volunteers, like Larry Leach, the work of GleanKY wouldn’t be possible. Larry is one of our all-star grocery gleaners who goes out on weekly gleaning trips to stores, like Fresh Market, to pick up excess produce and deliver it to Lexington recipients, such as Main Street Baptist Church. Dedicated volunteers like him ensure that less food ends up in the dumpster, and more goes to people who can use it to serve the community.
When did you start volunteering with GleanKY?
Last fall, I picked up apples with a group of volunteers at Reed Valley Orchard. Starting in January of this year, I’ve been gleaning weekly at Lexington groceries.
Why do you glean?
I’m retired now and have time to do what I want. I was looking for volunteering opportunities. Gleaning is a way to give back to the community. Also, gleaning reduces food waste, making it available to those with the greatest need.
In just a few words, what advice would you give to new gleaners?
Don’t forget that every trip you make will help others.
Any favorite gleaning moments that stick out?
GleanKY recipients are grateful for even small donations. However, I was excited by a February pickup at Fresh Thyme that was so large it took two trips to transport. I just knew lots of people would benefit from that produce.
If you were stuck on a desert island with one fruit or vegetable, what would it be and why?
Tough question. The best answer I can give: if vegetable, lettuce, since we eat lots of mixed salads with a variety of colors, textures and tastes; if fruit, grapes, since they have good shelf life, are sweet and take no preparation.
