Byron Bell is one our newest gleaners, but one with a lot of heart. He’s made it possible for us to make our first produce deliveries to Bourbon County. On Mondays, he joins us at Reed Valley Orchard and gleans apples to take to the Paris YMCA and a backpack program run out of the Bourbon County Extension Office.

1. When did you start volunteering with GleanKY?

I started gleaning after my job in Lexington ended in August 2017 and my sabbatical began.  I went to a gleaning intro at the Bourbon County Farmers Market and met Rachael, and now I’m on board.

2. Why do you glean?

It’s a very simple way to make a difference, and I can do it close to home and benefit my local community.

3. In just a few words, what advice would you give to new gleaners?

You’ve got the time, don’t keep it all to yourself.  Your community needs you!

4. Any favorite gleaning moments that stick out?

Since I just started, I would have to say meeting Mary Powell, gleaning coordinator at Reed Valley Orchard, for the first time and seeing how passionate she is about this activity.

5. If you were stuck on a desert island with one fruit or vegetable, what would it be and why?

I’d have to pick something that I could save the seeds from and grow on the island—probably a tomato, seeing how I have a lot of tomato plants and had good success with them this year.  The small golden cherry tomatoes are my favorite!
