Gleaning – the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields

As the winter air blew across Central KY, crops were still growing in the fields.  Blooms’ colors catch your eye as they are warmed by the sun only to bring a moment of excitement knowing there is not time to grow into fruits and vegetables.  It is hard to say goodbye to the growing season.

Thirty volunteers gathered on a cool October morning to glean the remaining crops at Berries on Bryan Station.  Instead of dying with the freeze, being thrown on the compost heap, or rotting on the vine, organic sweet and Irish potatoes, peppers, beets, green onions, chard and kale became a meal for those unable to afford such nutritious food.

Volunteers delivered 270 pounds of vegetables to Lighthouse Ministries and Women’s Hope Center.

This is Faith Feeds | GleanKY.

After gleaning, farmers Erik and Gayle Walles, along with Chef Jon Sanning of Windy Corner Market and culinary students, treated the volunteers to a delightful and healthy lunch.

We are grateful to our nearly 150 faithful volunteers who worked for the mission of Faith Feeds in 2012 – together we can end hunger.
