Rallying others behind a cause you care about can take some serious persuasion skills — but if these letters are any indication, the fourth grade class at Lemons Mill Elementary School in Scott County is well on its way.

In May, representatives from several local nonprofits visited the fourth graders and gave presentations about their organization’s work.  GleanKY board member Michele Carlisle, also a Scott County resident, discussed how volunteer gleaners help reduce hunger and food waste in Central Kentucky.  Then the fourth graders got to work.

Each student wrote a letter to persuade his or her classmates to donate $100 to the nonprofit he or she liked the best.  Whichever organization had the most number of letters would receive a $100 check from Lemons Mill Elementary PTA.

Thanks to some enthusiastic supporters, GleanKY tied for first place and received a $50 check from Lemons Mill Elementary PTA.  We enjoyed reading the fourth graders’ awesome letters.  We were particularly impressed with their persuasive techniques.

Such as encouraging a sense of empathy:

I would feel sad if I didn't eat tonight and went starving

If a kid in your class deprives food

Or highlighting how hard our volunteers work:

Sometimes they have to put food in their cars

GleanKY will even let kids that are not even 1 year old yet

The volunteers even get snake bit

Thank you for your enthusiasm, Fourth Grade Class of Lemons Mill Elementary!

Are you with me!
