Food DayLexington Farmers’ Market and Faith Feeds Celebrate Food Day by Hosting Real Food Donation Drive

Community event calls attention to food access issues in Lexington and celebrates national movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food

On Thursday, October 24th, people around the country will be celebrating Food Day—the celebration and movement of healthy, affordable, sustainably produced food. In Lexington, Faith Feeds and the Lexington Farmers’ Market will be teaming up to host a Real Food Donation Drive at the Market’s Thursday location on the corner of S. Broadway and Maxwell.

Faith Feeds|GleanKY will be accepting produce donations at the Food Day event between 8 am and 3 pm. Individuals can to drop off donations gleaned from their backyard gardens or purchased at market to be donated to feeding programs around the city.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate our partnership with local farmers and raise awareness of hunger in our community”, said Jennifer Erena, Faith Feeds director.  “Come learn how you can reduce waste in your own backyard garden by donating excess to people in need.”

Additionally, the Lexington Farmers’ Market will have an expanded selection of fresh produce and value-added products grown and produced around the state. Market staff will also be on-hand to answer questions about the WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition voucher programs, for those individuals interested in utilizing the vouchers before they expire on November 1st.

Recipes, shopping tips, and other food resources will also be available to all who attend.

“The Lexington Farmers’ Market is looking forward to highlighting the healthy, affordable, and local food available every week in Lexington, while ensuring that more Lexington residents are able to get fresh produce with the help of Faith Feeds,” explained Stephanie Hopkins, Assistant Manager of the Lexington Farmers’ Market. “Food Day gives us a platform to discuss and address issues related health and access in Lexington.”
