This fall, Glean Kentucky had the opportunity to head out to Reed Valley Orchard to collect windfall apples. Despite being a tough season for open-air farming around Kentucky, we gleaned over 7,000 pounds of apples from August to October.
The bulk of these apples were distributed to Feeding EKY, a nonprofit formed after the devastating flooding in Eastern Kentucky this summer. This group has fed thousands of people in the months following this disaster, and their goal is to make this a sustainable, full-time mission to continue providing hunger relief to those in harder-to-reach areas of the region. We are so thankful for their work and are honored by the opportunity to work with them this season!
We provided apples to agencies in Lexington during this season, too— Sisters’ Rd to Freedom, Northside Mobile Home Park, Elm Tree Lane Apartments, The HOPE Center, Maxwell Street Presbyterian, Embrace Church, Calvary Church of the Nazarene, Family Care Center and The Nest.
We especially would love to thank the Reed family and Stepping Stone Farm for having us at the orchard again this year. Another thank you to our many volunteers that stepped up during this season! We couldn’t have done it without you.
