Retail grocery gleaning has begun!

Glean Kentucky has partnered with Feeding American, Kentucky’s Heartland (FAKH) to bring retail produce gleaning to Warren County. FAKH knows how to move food to where it needs to be. They have an amazing warehouse in Elizabethtown that houses mountains of food destined for those in need. If a large produce donation is made directly to FAKH, they would have to bring it to their warehouse in Elizabethtown and then distribute it to their partners who would then get it into actual hands. But the delicate nature and short lifespan of fresh produce doesn’t like that long trip and time to distribution.

This is where Glean Kentucky comes in!

Since we deal only in produce, we’re able to pick up the fresh produce right from the donating retail store and deliver it to food equity agencies in the same day! This means more and better produce is available to feed Warren County families in need. I’m fairly new to work in food equity but I quickly learned that fresh produce is a delicacy to those families. And we don’t want to stop at Warren County. The goal is to take this same service into surrounding counties, but I can’t do that alone.

This where you come in!

I need volunteers to help in this mission.  Retail grocery gleaning happens early in the day.  Right now, it’s only Warren County. Starting in spring, we will branch into Barren County (Glasgow), Simpson County (Franklin), and Logan County (Russellville).  You don’t have to have a huge vehicle!  While it does help to have a truck, SUV, or hatchback, some deliveries are small enough to fill a trunk and/or backseat.  All help is good help! Not sure how you can help? Reach out and we will figure it out together.  I am in special need of volunteers for the second week of February. I will be taking a trip with my mom and will be out all that week.

Here are specific volunteer opportunities:
  • Monday 8am Kroger Scottsville Rd pick-up, then to Greenwood Park Church on Campbell Ln
  • Monday 9am Kroger Campbell Ln pick-up, then to Greenwood Park Church on Campbell Ln
  • Monday 10am Kroger 31W pick-up, then to Greenwood Park Church on Campbell Ln
  • Wednesday 8am Kroger Scottsville Rd pick-up, then to Salvation Army Main St
  • Wednesday 10am Kroger Campbell Ln pick-up, then to Salvation Army Main St
  • Thursday 10am Kroger 31W pick-up, then to Greenwood Park Church on Campbell Ln

If you can help in any way, please reach out to me at jerilyn@gleanky.org or you can call me at 859-444-4769 ext. 1005. Thank you for all you do!
